Winter League Round 5.
Reffolds Top Lake. Sunday 18th February.
1st Rod Stoyle 37lb 4oz
2nd John Oliver 13lb 8oz
3rd Roy Allibone 9lb 8oz
8 fished

Conditions were certainly better than last time, almost pleasant. Expectations were high, but then fishing is 90% anticipation anyway.

The draw is almost as much fun as the fishing COULD be…the pegs put into the hat were a varied bunch, leaving out 9 and putting in 3 & 5 for a change. Rodney drew 3, he hated it, swore and questioned why it was put in in the first place! Last peg out, drawn by Rodney for John Wood was 8, once again the fool was drawn a potentially winning peg, he was pleased. All Joe wanted was 11, Roy got that, Joe had unlucky 13, so let the match commence.

Not sure who had the first fish Bozzy off 17 or Rod from the crap peg 3, both were good fish, the rest struggled. It was hard, Dave fishing under his feet caught roach all day but hardly any showed elsewhere, weird.

In the end, Rodney off the hated, crap peg had 14 carp (+ 3 roach) for a superb weight of 37lbs 4ozs, fishing mostly corn just off the edge of the right hand island, he lost a couple too. Amazing.

Runner-up was Johnnie Oliver, fishing the maggot lead straight out in front of him, he had a cracking carp in his 13:08 bag, fishing from 15 on the Oak Tree bank. He played his Joker so 18 points for him. Third was Roy from 11 (“I would have won it from there” says Joe) two small carp about midday a cracker in the last hour. 9:08 on the scales. Fourth was Bozzy he had 17 also on the Oak Tree Bank, fishing everywhere he had carp and a few roach to weigh in 9:00.

5th was John Wood with 7:06 fishing from 8 into 9 lost a good fish in the lilies early on, caught another and one more with 15 minutes to go, both on double fluro pinkie, so he blew it as usual.

With 2:14 each Jason & Dave shared 6th place and the last of the proper points, Dave doubled his on the Joker. Dave had an all tiny roach bag in the corner off 5 with Jason landing a single carp off the usually more prolific peg 1. Actually a hard day for all except Rod off that terrible, awful, crap peg 3.

Poor young Joe didn’t have a single bite all day, so just the point for turning up then.

This series will go to the wire, two past winners Rod & Roy have their Jokers to play, Bozzy has too.

The Next Match is on 18th March on the Bottom Lake.
