Winter League Round 1.
Sunday 29th October. Reffolds Top Lake
1st Roy Allibone 25lb 12oz
2nd Jason Luke 23lb 4oz
3rd Joe Flower 20lb 7oz
9 Fished

The First round of the current series was expected to be fished in dropping temperatures but these kept up and it was a lovely autumnal day with a little wind, leaves did cause some problems.

It started slowly for most, except Bozzy who had four good fish off 13 in the first hour, Rodney had drawn 17 and was struggling early on, first fish were a while coming for all.

The feature of the day was, once again the battle between those drawn on the lilies in pegs 8 & 9. Current Champion, Jason Luke vs. past Champion Roy Allibone, both fishing contrasting methods. Jason could get nothing up against or near the lilies, nothing down amongst the roots to his right either, so off he goes, single maggot fished to hand right in front of him, roach cut with a few big carp, catching all day. Roy did find the fish right up against the lilies on the left, fishing meat & corn, too close sometimes perhaps as he lost three, with another couple smashing him up. Mostly carp one to two pounds. Roy came out the winner of the bout with 25lbs 12ozs, to Jason’s 23:04 but it was much closer than the weights show. 1st & 2nd on the day too.

Third was Joe Flower on peg 1 (he really wanted 11!) who fished all methods, all baits, all over the place to catch all sorts but mostly carp for 20:07, on netting one good fish Joe greatly amused John Wood who told him it was the most untidiest landing of a fish he’d ever seen! But then he was only jealous…..

Previous Champion Rod Stoyle was in the corner on peg 17 and didn’t have a single bite to his left, fishing only pellet he dug some carp out of the oak tree roots and weighed in a creditable 19:10.

Bozzy added little to his early fish so 14:05 was disappointing, but 6 points all the same. The only other proper points with 5 and 6:02 was John Wood off 11, three carp & bits but basically he struggled all day.

Just before the match started Dave Martin came to John Wood and asked if it was too late to play his Joker, he’d forgotten to speak up, “Yes” said John as he’d drawn. So Dave with just 3ozs & 4 points ……

Next is ROUND 2, on the Bottom Lake on Sunday 12th November 2017
