Winter League Final. Reffolds Top Lake. Sunday 23rd April.
1st Dave Martin 20lb 14oz
2nd Jason Luke 18lb 9oz
3rd Rod Stoyle 15lb 9oz
7 fished.

The last match of the series was greeted with great sadness; it was to report that John Baxter had passed away suddenly on Easter Sunday. John had really enjoyed his first series with us and enjoyed the hard fishing and done well. We were all sorry he couldn’t be there.

It was a pleasant day, not as warm as recently but the carp are now showing in better numbers. 7 Fished with Rod, Dave & Bob playing their Jokers, a great move by Dave who won the match well. Fishing off Oak Tree Bank peg 15 into the bank either side, he had a fine all carp bag for 20lbs 14ozs. Runner-up and eventual Series Winner was Jason Luke. Jason drew peg 18 again, from where he had come second on an earlier round. Jason started off with his usual tiddler bashing netting around 200 small roach & rudd, this wouldn’t have been enough and he was fortunate that the carp turned up later on, a mixed bag weighed in at 18:09.

Third was current Champion Rod Stoyle fishing off 11, a winning peg for Joe Flower in a previous round. They weren’t there for Rod and he had to be content with another mostly carp bag of 15:09 but a doubled points tally of 16. Paste doing the business.

Fishing off the lilies on peg 9 Johnnie Oliver enjoyed his day with lots of small carp for 14:12 and 4th.

John Wood drew peg 3, generally unused but promising with what’s left of the island a feature a pole’s length away. He caught straight off but struggled later on, in the last half hour two cracking fish lost to broken hooks could have made a difference to his 5th placed weight of 13:10.

Bob Smith on 17 and Bozzy on 1 shared 6th place, Bob’s points doubled. Both weighed in 9:10. Bozzy had a tale to tell, he hooked into a fish which in all his vast experience had never felt so heavy, simply smashing his 8lb straight through line…..what was that then??

So a first Winter League title for Champion Jason Luke, well done ~ his two winning weights of large quantities of tiny fish on the Bottom Lake earlier sealed it for him 46 points out of a possible 50 a great score. To Rod on 44, never mind not quite the final day result but making a real contest throughout the series.

Third was Bozzy with 39, not Dave 37 as the hopeless organizer paid out to…..Bozzy is a very keen contestant and really enjoyed his best position for ages. So that’s it for another season. We will revert to having matches later in this year in October & November when the weather seems kinder and the bags better in general. So watch this space.
