Last week’s winner Bill Barker was off to Worthing, and Rodney had to work, but Roy Allibone, last year’s League winner and John Stadius made their debuts.
There was some concern that the Centre Lake might freeze before the match, as it was it was a nice winters day, bit of sun, some light winds and according to Charlie Frost who came round at the end it fished much better than he had expected. Most who fished had fished the lake before but only during the summer so it was really an unknown entity.
Tony Aldworth won it well, but it was Roy Allibone who gave him his tactics for the day.
John Wood and Roy had their usual 10/-d (50p) to whomever catches the first fish, Roy had this within seconds of his first put-in, a small roach. That seen, Tony decided on an all out attack on the roach, just two sections of his pole, maggots and fished to hand he netted probably in excess of 200 fish, nothing big just one a chuck, hard work though for his 14lbs 10ozs.
Roy Allibone as usual framed with a bag of roach cut with about half a dozen skimmers/bream, fishing at about nine metres weighing in 9lbs 3ozs. Mostly to maggots but he tried all baits.
John Stadius, fished rod and line a caught skimmers from the off plus a few roach for a good third placed weight of 7lbs 5ozs. His skimmers coming to worms.
Dave Beard fishing to Tony’s right also fished for small roach but couldn’t match his rate of catching. John Wood made another method error, having caught a good bream over the pound on bread punch kept trying to find another one or two which didn’t come, so small roach made up his 4lbs 8ozs, a small roach left in his keep net, if weighed would have given him a matching weight with Bozzy.
John Oliver really couldn’t get anything going and it was a poor weight of 1lb 4ozs for him.
